Montenegro
Montenegro lies on the Adriatic coast, with Albania to the southeast and Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest. The complete geographical picture of the country is marvelously diverse and consists of three main units: a narrow coastal plain, a lofty Dinaric hinterland and an interior karst plain mottled with stubbly, maquis-covered hills.
Roads and Riding
Montenegro is not a heavily touristed country (yet) so its roads are empty. Roads are in very good condition, although mostly narrow in the mountains. Rain can occur in the mountains, so bringing wet-weather riding gear is highly advised.
Climate and Environment, When to Go
Montenegro has a Mediterranean climate along the coast, and can get hot and dry in the mountains in the summer. The coast of Montenegro can get busy with vacationers in July and August, so may be avoided during these months. The best time to ride Montenegro is in the spring or fall.
Sights, People, Food and Drink
Riding Montenegro means long, curving roads through mountain valleys. Horizon views are very nice. The country also has a spectacular Adriatic coastline, lined sporadically with medieval walled cities. The people of Montenegro are ethnically Slavic, with the modern census revealing 43% Montenegrins, 32% Serbs, 8% Bosnians, 5% Albanians and 12% Other. Montenegrin food is a mixture of grilled meats with the Mediterranean flavors of olives and garlic. Coffee is usually served Turkish-style, very strong and sweet.
